What our Customers have to say...

I cannot believe my eyes! I have recently purchased some back surfaced varifocals for the first time and am amazed with the difference to my sight. I can now even read the small print! I can fully recommend glassesframesandlenses.com.

Different Lens Types

Vision Types

  • Single Vision Lens - Lenses with one viewing purpose, for either distance or reading. Available in different index materials to make them lighter or thinner. Also available in Transitions photochromic plastic, polarised sun lenses, drivewear and with anti-reflective coatings, plus a full range of tints and treatments.
  • Bifocal Flat top 28 lens - A lens designed with a segment which gives two viewing zones on one lens. The main part of the lens is for distance viewing and the segment is for reading. Available in different index materials to make them thinner and lighter. Also in Transitions photochromic plastic  and polarised sun lenses. They can be supplied with reflection-free coatings, plus a full range of tints.
  • Varifocal - A lens designed with three viewing areas: distance, intermediate and reading. The power is gradually distributed across the lens from the top which is the distance area, down through the intermediate corridor for viewing objects between distance and reading, and into the reading area giving a smooth and comfortable transition of power. Varifocals are today far more popular than bifocals as they offer greater visual and cosmetic benefits. We supply three different types of Varifocals: Standard, Premium and Bespoke.
  • Standard Varifocal - A conventional high performance front surfaced varifocal. Available in a full range of 1.5, 1.6 and 1.67 index with Transitions and Polarised lenses. Can be supplied with anti-reflection coatings and a full range of tints.
  • Premium Varifocal - This lens provides enhanced and wider visual performance than the standard varifocal and offers a far more comprehensive range of lens materials to make the lens thinner and lighter. It can also be supplied in a larger range of photochromic options as well as sunglass lenses and Drivewear. Can be supplied with anti-reflective coatings.
  • Bespoke Varifocal - The ultimate varifocal lens and the biggest breakthrough in lens technology in the last 20 years. This lens has the Varifocal area on the rear surface of the lens and is custom built to your individual prescription, unlike the standard varifocal which has the varifocal area moulded on the front surface and is therefore not individually designed for your usage. This benefits the wearer as the varifocal viewing areas are nearer to the front of the eye and therefore are much wider than when on the front of the lens. An example to demonstrate this is as follows: If you have your eye 3 inches back from a key hole as you look through it you will be able to see a limited amount at the other side of the room. However, if you push your eye up as close as possible to the keyhole you can see a lot more than you could previously. This, combined with the fact that the varifocal part of the lens is individually crafted to your needs, is the reason for the enhanced optical performance. This lens is available in our widest range of materials for thinner and lighter lenses, and a full range of photochromic plastics, sunlenses as well as Drivewear. Can be supplied with anti-reflective coatings and a full range of tints.

Lens Materials and Refractive Index

Spectacle lenses are available in a wide range of materials. These are recognised by the refractive index such as 1.5, 1.6, 1.67 and 1.74. In short, the higher the index of the material the thinner and lighter the lens will be in a given prescription.

  • Standard 1.5 index plastic - Conventional plastic lens. Light and durable, and can be supplied with all treatments and comes with anti scratch coating as standard.
  • Thin 1.59 index polycarbonate - Provided as standard on all our rimless frames for its strength, durability and lightness. Polycarbonate is as thin as our thin 1.6 index plastic lens and 12% lighter as standard. When combined with our rimless titanium frames you will have the lightest combination available in rimless frames (featherweight). The construction of polycarbonate material also makes it extremely strong which is why we use it in rimless as the lens does not have a rim to give it strength. Polycarbonate is also shock resistant, over 12 times more so than standard 1.5 index plastic lenses. Because of its strength and shock resistance polycarbonate is also used for safety spectacles. Polycarbonate comes with anti scratch as standard and can be supplied with a full range of tints and anti-reflective coatings.
  • Thin 1.6 index plastic - Up to 20% thinner than standard 1.5 index plastic and up to 25% lighter. Has full UVA and UVB ultraviolet light absorption as standard to protect the eye from the suns harmful rays. Comes with anti scratch and UV protection as standard, and can be supplied with all treatments.
  • Super thin 1.67 index plastic - On average 15% thinner than the 1.6 index plastic and on average 15% lighter. Has full UVA and UVB ultraviolet light absorption as standard to protect the eye from the suns harmful rays. Comes with anti scratch, UV400 and anti reflective coating as standard. Can be supplied with all treatments.
  • Ultra thin 1.74 index plastic - The thinnest and lightest lens material available. On average 10% thinner than super thin 1.67 index plastic and on average 10% lighter. The ultimate material choice for higher prescriptions. Also has full UVA and UVB ultraviolet light absorption as standard to protect the eye from the suns harmful rays and also anti scratch and anti reflective coating too! Can be supplied with all treatments.

Lens Colour Options

  • Tints - A full range of fashion tints can be applied to most lenses to enhance their cosmetic appearance. Tint availability can be checked as part of your lens choice process.
  • Colormatic Photochromic Plastic - A lens material that goes dark in sunlight but clears once indoors. This material does not darken to full sunglass tint and does not work behind a car windscreen. Only available in standard 1.5 index plastic on Standard Varifocals. Can be supplied with all treatments.
  • Transitions Photochromic Plastic - The most advanced Photochromic (light reactive) lens on todays market. Transitions darken faster than Colormatic lenses and fade to clear up to 3 times quicker. They are available in up to Super Thin 1.67 index and are compatible with our full range of Premium and Bespoke Varifocals. Can be supplied with all treatments.
  • Polarised Sun Lenses - The best choice you can make for a sunglass lens in your prescription. Our Polarised lenses cut out glare by eliminating reflected light from water, snow, ice, wet roads, windshields, etc. by incorporating a special polarising filter which only allows useful light through (unlike conventional tinted sunlenses). Our polarised lenses are available in up to Super Thin 1.67 index plastic.To enhance this product further they can be supplied with anti-reflective coatings.
  • Drivewear Driving Lenses - Designed specifically for the motorist, Drivewear lenses combine the features of Polarising and Photochromic lenses, with the added benefit of working both outside and behind the windscreen of a car (unlike other Photochromic lenses). From bright sunlight accompanied by intense blinding glare, to overcast inclement conditions, Drivewear lenses provide the best visual solution. Drivewear can be enhanced further by adding one of our special coatings.

Treatments & Coatings

  • UV400 Protective coating ? The coating is applied to the front and rear surface of the lens to eliminate residual reflections on the lens surfaces, and to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Extensive exposure to the sun's UV rays can cause disorders such as cataracts and mascular degeneration. This coating is particularly recommended for anyone working outdoors in bright sunlight.
  • Anti-Reflective coating ? The coating is applied to the front and rear surface of the lens to eliminate residual reflections on the lens surfaces. This improves the visual quality and cosmetic appearance for the wearer. Our Anti-Reflective coating also has scratch resistance properties as standard to protect your lenses against unwanted scratches.
  • Scratch Resistant coating ? The coating is applied to the front and rear surface of the lens to help prevent scratches. This will increase the life of your lenses by reducing the wear and tear, providing you with better vision and improved cosmetic appearance.
  • Super Duper coating - The ultimate four-in-one, providing better value for money!
    • Applied to the front and rear surfaces of the lens;
    • Anti-Reflective properties eliminate residual reflections on the lens surface that reduce clarity of vision;
    • Enhanced scratch resistance;
    • Includes UV400 Protection;
    • Prevents water, dirt and greasy smudges from sticking to your lens surface to keep them cleaner.
    • The best, most cost-effective coating on the market, and exclusive online to glassesframesandlenses.com!
