What our Customers have to say...

I cannot believe my eyes! I have recently purchased some back surfaced varifocals for the first time and am amazed with the difference to my sight. I can now even read the small print! I can fully recommend glassesframesandlenses.com.

Getting used to Varifocals

New to Varifocals? Here is a quick guide so you know what to expect from the first few days.

GFL- your mark of quality

With today's designs in Varifocal lenses, most first-time wearers notice no problems at all, however for others there can be some adjustment period required.

For those of you who are new to Varifocals (progressive lenses), you may feel at first as if you will never get used to the 'swim' sensation when you initially make quick head movements. You may also experience a blur in the peripheral zones of the lenses when you glance to the far right or left, especially when you look down. Do not worry, this sensation will soon pass.

Generally, it takes between a few minutes to a few days for people to adjust to wearing Varifocal lenses. This is because the brain needs to learn to work with them. However for those who have a lot of hyperopia (farsightedness), adapting to progressive lenses may take a little longer.

Side effects:

  • 'swim' sensation
  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • blurring

We advise that when these symptoms set in, simply remove the Varifocal lenses for a short period and replace after the symptoms have subsided. Please do not be tempted to return to your older prescription glasses or different lens design (Bifocal, Trifocal), as this will only serve to increase the adjustment period.

If you do have problems with a 'swim' sensation or blurring, you may at first need to make more slight head movements to look more directly at objects. These problems will eventually disappear as your brain learns to adjust.

Please take due care if operating machinery or driving during your adjustment period.
